Cocktail Lounges

Favorites are starred.

Algonquin lobby bar ( 59 W 44th St) This was a fun literary diversion; loved stopping in but the drinks and service were not anything special.

MO Lounge Mandarin Oriental Hotel Lobby Bar (35 fl, Columbus Circle, entrance on 60th St)

Beautiful view of Central Park and 5th Avenue.

*Baccarat Bar and Salon (28 W 53rd)

A luxurious spot for a glass of champagne served in, of course, Baccarat flutes.

*Bar 65 at the Rainbow Room (65th floor of 30 Rock) CLOSED                                                               I'm leaving this on My NYC List just in case it were to reopen. Love the view!

**Bemelmans at The Carlyle (35 E 76th St)

This is our all-time favorite in the entire world! Piano music begins around 5:30. Cover charge.

Lobby Bar at the Hotel Chelsea (226 W 23rd St) I've always been fascinated with Hotel Chelsea so couldn't wait to check out the lobby bar after all the renovations had been completed. It offers lots of cozy bar lounging space as you'd expect. We did not have reservations and the wait wasn't too bad.

*The Campbell (inside Grand Central Station)

Beautiful little "secret" bar in plain sight.

Center Bar (10 Columbus Circle, 4th Floor)

Dante (79 MacDougal St) Popular cocktail bar in old historic building

Dead Rabbit (30 Water St)

The Empire Rooftop at the Empire Hotel (44 W 63rd St)

*King Cole Bar in St Regis Hotel (2 E 55th St); recently refurbished

*Oscar Wilde (45 W 27th St) Loved stopping in this Victorian/Oscar Wilde themed bar!

*Park Hyatt "The Living Room"(153 W 57th St) We love this quiet, reserved bar with a view of the Russian Tea Room and Carnegie Hall

Pebble Bar (67 W 49th St)  Located in iconic three-story townhouse overlooking 6th Avenue; part of Rockefeller Center; very lively

R Lounge (Renaissance Hotel, 7th Ave at 48th St)

This space has changed many times over the years.  It is the perfect spot to kill some time before a Broadway show.  Offers the most perfect view of Times Square.

Pen Top (Rooftop bar at The Peninsula Hotel, 5th Ave at 55th St)

Tiny's and Bar Upstairs (135 West Broadway) The bar upstairs is truly tiny but lively and fun

Upstairs at the Kimberly (145 E 50th St)

The Raines Law Room in the William Hotel (24 E 39th)

Ring the bell for entrance into this bar for Prohibition Era cocktails; we have not been able to get in here yet but will try next trip; very crowded during the holidays.

McSorley's Old Ale House (15 E 7th St)

I first heard about McSorley's on a Bower Boys NYC History podcast.  (And btw, if you love history, you will love these podcasts!) McSorley's is the oldest continuously operated saloon in NYC.  It was established in 1854 and has had patrons such as Abe Lincoln, John Lennon and Woody Guthrie.  FYI, when you order a beer, they bring you two!

Fraunces Tavern (54 Pearl St)

This tavern is housed in the oldest building in NYC.  It is where George Washington bid farewell to his troops. It is also a restaurant but we have never eaten here, just come by for a drink at the bar. (Be sure to walk all the way back to the main bar.)

On My NYC List to try

The Polo Bar (1 E 55th St)

Overstory Bar (70  Pine Street) Great view and reservations accepted

Graduate Hotel rooftop bar (Roosevelt Island) Supposedly great view of Manhattan
